What do you say to your son when he tells you that he has cut his drinking down to 1 bottle of wine and a few gin and tonics per night !!! Does anyone think this is ok ?

That’s definitely not ok! It’s well into binge drinking territory every night, and will undoubtedly do long term damage if he keeps it up.
There are plenty of accounts out there online from people who “only had a few glasses” each night and eventually found themselves facing liver failure. Sorry to say, but it’s absolutely a problem. 😢
