When drinking and smoking go together
Alcohol and cannabis are the two substances the world hands people without warning, sold in shops and joked about at family dinners. So when someone you love is using both heavily every day, the people around you are slow to see what you’re seeing, and the behaviour isn’t dramatic enough to alarm anyone outside the house. There are no overdoses, no police calls, just a person who is rarely fully present.
The combination has a way of laundering itself. “I barely drink, I’m stoned.” “I barely smoke, I’m drinking.” Each substance is the small one in any conversation about the other, and there’s no rock bottom because nothing breaks. Sleep stops being restorative, mood becomes flatter, and you get anxiety in the morning and irritability in the evening. You may have tried to raise it and been told it’s just how they unwind. That doesn’t mean you’ve stopped noticing.
What you’ll find here
The posts below are from people whose loved one drinks and smokes daily. Some are partners. Some are parents of adult children still living at home. Some are people who used to be casual users themselves, watching the same pattern in someone they love and recognising it from the inside.
This is a place to write honestly about something most people don’t think is serious.
