Supporting someone with alcohol addiction

When someone you love drinks too much

Watching someone you care about struggle with alcohol is one of the loneliest experiences a person can have. Not because you’re alone in it, but because alcohol is wallpaper. Everyone drinks, so when you say quietly that something is wrong, the people around you tell you you’re overreacting. You’re not.

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably already covered for them, sat through the morning apology and the evening denial, and found bottles in places people don’t usually keep bottles. None of it has worked the way you hoped, and that isn’t your failure. The medical world can also understate the danger, because heavy daily drinking can stop being safely stoppable, and a doctor’s “cut down” advice can miss someone who needs supervised withdrawal.

What you’ll find here

The posts below are written by other people going through the same thing: parents of adult children drinking themselves into hospital, partners who don’t know whether to leave or stay, siblings who haven’t seen the person they grew up with in years. They aren’t experts, they’re people in the middle of it, and most posts are short. Some are angry, some are grateful, and all of them are honest.
