Somebody supporting another with cannabis addiction
Finding every day a struggle. Our son is 19 and adopted as a baby. He has severe ADHD and is not working. He is getting more desperate each day for cash to buy cannabis. I am his appointee for DWP and Universal credit. I'm thinking of handing him his debit card because I've had enough of trying to help him manage money. He will not listen to any advice.
This morning he said he's no money. He spent his £100 universal credit in 2 days again. He told me not to speak about jobs or he would smash his room up. He smells off cannabis and lies to sneak it in the house. The smell of it makes me feel sick . He hides it but it stinks.
Don't want to throw his off the bus so to speak but my husband and I are being verbally abused every day.
Going to try to get him a council flat

It’s so hard isn't it 😢 - are you getting any help for you & your husband? Even if your son won’t accept help or is not ready to - maybe some support for you might help.
We were at a loss and had to reach out to get help for us first - I did an online chat with the Forward Trust who then rang me back. I will never forget that first call with them - an hours call, mainly me in tears, but it did help as has the family support worker from there ever since - always gave good advice (sometimes the hard advice we didn’t initially want to hear).
We had to give our son in the end a choice - change his lifestyle and respect us / our home or leave. He left, was sofa surfing for a few months before returning home. It didn't last long as unfortunately one evening he was violent to his brother so had to leave. He lived in his car for months but then lost his licence & got referred for help with The Forward Trust as part of rehabilitation. He eventually got the council to help fund a deposit & first month’s rent for shared accommodation with the help again of the housing team at Forward Trust. Forward wind to now and he is back home in early recovery, awaiting formal diagnosis for ADHD and Autism.
I think, whilst it was the worst thing for me as a mum, having him leave home and him having to pull through was probably pivotal. As was losing licence as he learned consequences.
I do think ADHD really is connected to the behaviours. I wish we had picked that up sooner.
