ADHD link to addiction?
Somebody supporting another with alcohol and cocaine addictions
Im interested in hearing from others whose loved ones have been diagnosed with ADHD and have been given any advice about the link with addiction.
My son has been referred by the GP for an ADHD and Autism assessment - under the Right to Choose pathway. She also asked my son if he would be willing to take medication for it which he said yes to, but obviously that causes me concern but if it helps thats a good thing?
Anyone got any experience of this?

Hi Bel, my son was diagnosed with adhd in February this year. The Psychiatrist also asked whether he would consider meds but my son refused at the time due to his other drug use. The psychiatrist agreed due to the effects on the heart of stimulants on top of stimulants.
Research does suggest a strong link between adhd and addition, and kinda makes sense given the adhd symptoms of executive dysfunction. My son will say how cocaine calms his mind/thoughts down, which is what the adhd meds are designed to do i believe. There are some non stimulant options, but from what I've read, they aren't the most effective.
I found the the adhd adults uk podcast really helpful for my understanding. Hope this helps.
