How Do You Find You Again?
Somebody supporting another with alcohol addiction
For those of us who are supporting, or who have supported someone with addiction, it can start to feel like our entire identity gets wrapped around theirs — their needs, their crises, their healing.
I’ve been asking myself lately:
Where do I end and the role of “supporter” begin?
Have I forgotten who I am outside of their struggle?
In my situation, it wasn’t that I wanted to stop caring — not at all. But I wonder if constantly being in the “support” role made me lose sight of my own wants, needs, and boundaries.
So I’m putting this out there to others in similar shoes:
How do you hold space for yourself while holding someone else up? Have you ever had to actively reclaim your own identity — and how did you start?
Really curious what this looks like for others.
