Somebody supporting another with alcohol and cannabis addictions
Hello I am new to the group and struggling with my son, he is drinking and smoking weed to "help him feel better"  we have just moved in with my partner and his kids, I have moved to a different district, I have been with my partner now for nearly 4 years and my son was about to be kicked out of his school for behaviour issues he started drinking and smoking started then, so the move was for a number of reasons. One was that me and my partner are moving forward in our relationship, and so that my son could have a fresh start.
The house has been stinking badly of weed and my partner has said he can't be here if he is bringing that smell or drugs back to the house as he risks losing access to his kids, and I just don't know what to do as my son will not listen. I have spoken with his school and they have put me in touch with a mentor who deals with substance mis use, does anyone know of anything else I can use or put me in touch with?
There is loads more to his background almost too much to write out, his dad has a big part to play in it all, which was part of the reason for moving aswell.

Sorry you are going through this. It sounds as if you are under a lot of pressure. My son is 21 and we have had similar issues for years. If I had my time again I would have put in boundaries saying no booze or weed in the house. Your partner is making a reasonable request not to have it round his children. I know you are in a complicated situation but without boundaries he won’t know what the limits are you are willing to accept so will carry on as he is. I was only able to put boundaries in and stick to them with the support of a local family support worker. I’m currently doing a course with Forward Trust. Get as much support as you can for yourself as well as him, if he is willing, to help you navigate this incredibly stressful time. Keep reaching out and talking, you aren’t alone xx

Hi
Sorry to hear your going through this with yr son. Can I ask how old he is?
Agree with Holly, you definitely need to set boundaries as his use could excel. This will put a major strain on yr relationship also, not right yr partner could lose seeing his children because of your son drug use. Hopefull  your son understands that. Don't let your son play youse off each other. You and your partner must show a united front.
Please get in touch with local support groups / mentor from school.
Remind your son that the move was for a fresh start. What hobbies / sports does he enjoy, would he join a club? Meet new friends?
Weed is not the innocent drug people say, in my experience now its sadly the stepping stone to harder drugs.
Sending hugs xx
