My son has been using ketamine for about 2.5 years now. He’s recently met a girl and seems very happy, he has still been using this horrid drug and it’s causing problems in their relationship. He promised us both a week ago that he would stop and wants to stop but yesterday I found an empty bag that had fallen out of his pocket. He said he finished work and decided to take some but is adamant he’s not addicted and doesn’t crave it. How can I believe him, that to me is someone who is addicted. How do you know if someone really wants to stop? 😔

Everyone’s experience is different but from our own experience with our now 23y old son, it was when he (not us) started seeking help for himself - going to, in his case, his Forward Trust 121 meetings with his support worker & CA meetings initially (although this was triggered by him hitting his rock bottom - sleeping in his car, then losing his licence, job). Â
And after that, him starting to really want to reconnect and make amends with his family.
I truly believe they have to want to stop - and that is so frustrating when as a parent nothing you say / do seems to get through until they see the damage its doing to their lives & no longer want that to be the case.
If its ketamine maybe if he has physical signs of damage that might be a motivation for him as it might scare him? I think younger people are sadly doing this drug more as it’s apparently so cheap & easy to get. There should be more groups for the young going through this.
I think this app shared a link to The Mix which is an online forum/website aimed at young audience - that might be worth him checking out?

My son stopped when he realised the physical impact it was having on him which resulted in him having time off work and college. He was quite poorly physically and also mentally. He has admitted that his bladder has been affected. It’s such a common and easily accessible, cheap drug. As Bel said it has to come from him. I used to remind my son of the physical dangers and comment on how it was affecting him. It was a difficult time, I feel for you. Good luck and make sure you are supported, it’s a tough road on your own x
