Somebody supporting another with ketamine addiction
Can I ask if anyone else has a situation where their loved one wants to stop (ketamine)?
My son is 22, lives with us and was using heavily, writhing in pain with k cramps etc
He doesn’t seem in pain lately but clear evidence that he was using daily, at home alone, mainly to disassociate after the tragic deaths of two friends. One murdered, one killed in car crash.
The issue we have is that he lives at home, works at home and if he goes out of the house, he does buy ket
This puts immense pressure on my husband and I as we have to be around him 24/7 so that nothing can be dropped at the house or him go out
I do think he really wants to stop but he is still so vulnerable
He is having periods of abstinence now but the co start cycle is exhausting!
He has had counselling but refuses to engage with rehab or support groups as he’s vet she and totally embarrassed about his behaviour. He has recently had a screening for ASD and adhd and scores very highly for both.
Is anyone else at a similar stage to us or has gone through this kind of thing?
Hoping the reducing of intake will help him to eventually stop

I could have written this about my daughter currently . Sectioned 3 times due to mental health exasperated by ketamine and cocaine use . The last time she was sectioned was 3 years ago , engaged in support was diagnosed ASC which really helped understand who she is. 6 months ago she went through a horrendous time with her now ex partner and this has spiralled sending her back to old.coping strategies .
I'm living in fear of how bad does this get again , anxious when she leaves the house and really feel what your saying and how this impacts everyone's else's life .

So sorry to hear about your daughter and what you have been having to see and feel.
Addiction is such a roller coaster. At the moment everyone you speak to seems to be suffering from addiction and or mental health challenges and/or is supporting loved ones through these very challenging times. Sending you and your daughter love and strength

Hi Poppy - I asked a good friend of mine (someone I met through a face to face support group) re this as her son (now early 30s) is maintaining sobriety from ketamine.
She said that she found positive reinforcement was beneficial focusing on the positive things her son was doing and highlighting to him he was starting to make the right choices.
Also giving him responsibility helped, he realised through this that they trusted him.
He also recognised that he had to keep busy and not have time on his hands and he still continues to do this.
Also they never gave him cash they learnt that early on.
She said that she tried to get him to understand not to be embarrassed and that addiction is a mental health disorder and others want to help (she is a nurse herself). She found her son eventually reached out for help himself (in his case a CBT therapist and a local support group for men). She said her son has only recently stopped his CBT therapy - so he was doing that for well over a year. I think key is he wanted to stop too just as you say your son does too x
I hope that might help in some way. Maybe gives a little hope x

We have had a good few days and we do keep praising him for that and letting him know that we know it’s not easy!
He is going to the dentist today and he’s going alone
Just hope he doesn’t cave in
If he can do this without picking up a bag, that will be massive progress
